What is oily skin?
The skin is full of pores known as hair follicles, attached to these hair follicles are sebaceous glands which produce an oily substance called sebum. Sebum is made to lubricate the hair and skin and stop it from drying out.
The excess sebum can cause enlarged pores, dull or shiny thick skin, blackheads, whiteheads and pimples.
What causes oily skin?
The severity of oily skin depends on the following factors:
- Androgens – androgens are males hormones present in both males and females, unbalanced levels cause the maturation of the skins sebaceous glands. As these glands mature, oil production increases.
- Hereditary factors could also determine how your skin reacts to the environment and to hormones.
